  “WATCH OUT”

                               “GOD’S WORD IS TRUE”

                                        2 PETER 3:1-7

How important it is for us as Christians to understand God's truth. Peter admonishes his readers to understand some important facts about God and the promise of Christs coming.

1. Mind The Word of God, For It Is True- 2 Peter 3:1-2

2 Peter 3:1-2 “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior.”

“Stir up your pure minds "(vs1) arouse it so that you can remember.

“Stir up your pure minds” vs.1, “be mindful” vs.2, "knowing this first” vs.3, “be not ignorant of this one thing” vs.8

Entychus went to sleep listening to Paul preach (Acts 20:7-10). 

God's Word is true, we must pay attention to it and take its message seriously. 

Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

The phrase “pure minds” vs. 1 means to have a clear, pure unmixed, uncontaminated, focused and concentrating mind.

2.  Scoffing At The Scoffers- 2 Peter 3:3-7

*Scoffers Will “Come In the last days”-2 Peter 3:3

2 Peter 3:3 “knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts.”

This is the message that we must heed, it is the last days. What are we going, to do about it?

Colossians 3:1-2 “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

*Scoffers Walk After Their Own Lust- 2 Peter 3:3

vs.3 “…walking according to their own lusts.”

They live like they want and do their own thing They want the possessions and pleasures of this world.

Colossians 3:5-6 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.”

1 Thessalonians 4:4-5 “that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”

1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.”

*Scoffers Ridicule The Return of Jesus Christ- 2 Peter 3:4

2 Peter 3:4 “and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 

They scoff for two reasons:

1. Thy scoff because it has been hundreds of years since Jesus

Christ came to earth the first time.

What ever happened to Jesus’ promise He will come again?

Luke 21:27 “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”

Acts 1:11 “who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

2. They scoff because the world continues on just as it aways has.

Proverbs 25:14 “Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain.”

Luke 12:19 “And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”

*Scoffers Are Ignorant of Three Facts- 2 Peter 3:5-7

Scripture says that they are willing ignorant (vs.5) They choose to ignore, to be unreasonable, and to reject the fact that God is the Creator and Sustainer of the world.

1. Scripture declares that the world is not self-creating and self-sufficient. 2 Peter 3:5 

2 Peter 3:5 “For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water.”

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Nehemiah 9:6 “You alone are the Lord; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, with all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.”

Job 26:7 “He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing.”

Psalm 102:25 “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.”

Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”

2. Scripture declares that the world has not always continued on as it presently does.

2 Peter 3:6 “by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.”

The point is this, the world was destroyed by Gods word once, it can therefore be destroyed by God’s Word again. The only reason the world has not yet been destroyed is that it is not yet God’s time.

Matthew 24:36-39 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. 37But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

3. Scripture declares that the heaven and earth are being kept, reserved, and stored up for destruction by fire. 

2 Peter 3:7 “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” 

How? By God's Word.

Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

God has the power to “break in" at any time and accomplish His will. He can send rain from heaven or fire from heaven.

Psalm 115:3 “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.”

So get stirred up and mind the Word of God for it is true!!
