“ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR LIFE?”
“ARE YOU USING YOUR HEAD?”
COLOSSIANS 2:18-23
Are You Using Your Head?
Colossians 2:18-19 “Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”
“Christ is the “Head” of the church” Colossians 1:18
Final Warning:
vs.18 “Let no one cheat you”- beguile, to trick, to deceive, disqualify, to trap.
Colossians 2:4 “Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.”
Romans 16:17-18 “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.”
2 Corinthians 11:1-4
Ephesians 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”
Colossians 2:18 “of your reward”
2 John 1:7-8 “For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.”
1 Corinthians 3:13-15
So what is at stake is your reward not your salvation. Don’t let someone deceive you, or trick you of your reward.
2 Timothy 4:8 “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
Colossians 3:23-25
Four Ways They Try To Take Your Reward:
1. Voluntary Humility
Colossians 2:18 “Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility”
This false humility brings attention and praise to themselves rather than God. False humility is self-centered and true humility is God-centered. Are you depending on God or on yourself?
2. Worshipping of Angels
Colossians 2:18 “ worship of angels”
The Worship Test:
Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
3. Intruding Into Those Things Which He Hath Not Seen
Colossians 2:18 “intruding into those things which he has not seen”
1 Corinthians 2:6-10
1 Corinthians 2:13 “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
4. Vainly Puffed Up By His Fleshly Mind
Colossians 2:18 “vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.”
Pride!
1 Corinthians 8:1 “Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.”
1 Corinthians 4:6 “Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.”
Watch out for false pride, false motivation.
Colossians 2:19 “And not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”
Who is the Head? Christ is the Head of the church.
Colossians 1:18 “And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.”
Colossians 2:10 “and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”
Vs.19 “not holding fast the Head”
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
We are to submit to Jesus Christ as our Lord, King of our lives.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
The reason we are deceived is because we don’t hold fast to the Head “Christ.”
Colossians 1:19 “from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”
Our body is to be nourished and knit together and is to relate properly to Jesus the Head.
Colossians 2:2 “knit together in love”
We receive nourishment from the Head, when we are in the proper place, submitted to Him. Are you out of your head?
Ephesians 4:15-16 “but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
Is Jesus Christ the Lord of your life? Is He in charge?
