“THE LIFE OF MOSES”

“A MEMORIAL TO A HERO”

DEUTERONOMY 34:1-12

We have no control over our birth or our death, but we do control how we live our dash.

The life of Moses:

  1.   The View From The Top

Deuteronomy 34:1 “Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan.”

Deuteronomy 34:1-3 “Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, 2all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 3the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.”

Again the Lord fulfilled His word to Moses:

Deuteronomy 32:48-52

Although he was not allowed to enter the land, he was given the joy of seeing the riches that the Hebrews were going to inherit:

Deuteronomy 34:4 “Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.”

Soon after he completed his survey:

Deuteronomy 34:5 “So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.”

There are two facts we should notice in this account of his death. First, he died alone. Second, he died secure.

2.   The Report And The Record:

In recounting Moses’ death, the Biblical text communicates various pieces of information that gives us a good deal of insight into this man:

*His Age:

Deuteronomy 34:7 “Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died…”

*His Condition:

Deuteronomy 34:7 “Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished.”

Death has a way of putting things into proper perspective, doesn’t it?

Deuteronomy 34:10 “But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.”

Moses lived to the hilt. You’re just as old as you want to be. Jim Elliot said, “Wherever you are, be all there, live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.” Live it up, go for it, throw a party, be all in.

*His Memory:

Deuteronomy 34:8 “And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended.”

Deuteronomy 34:10-12

3.   The Life And The Lessons- Three Secrets Revealed:

*The secret of fulfillment in life is involvement:

*The secret of reality in life is humility:

Proverbs 27:2 “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.”

*The secret of happiness in life is perspective:

Do you want a happy life? Look at life from God’s perspective. And give your burdens to Him, don’t carry them yourself.
